The South African U23 men's soccer team, Amaglug-glug, will be boarding the next flight back to South Africa.

This comes as they were knocked out of the football tournament in Rio after drawing 1-1 to Iraq earlier this morning.

South Africa had to beat Iraq to stand an outside chance of advancing to the quarter-final, while also having to rely on a favour by Denmark.

Gift Motupa opened the scoring in the 6th minute for South Africa’s only goal of the tournament, but Iraq’s captain, Saad Luaibi, equalised some 8 minutes later.

The hosts, Brazil, thrashed Denmark 4-0 ending South Africa’s dream and ensuring that Owen de Gama’s men finished last in Group A.

The national women's team, Banyana Banyana, also exited the competition at the first hurdle, collecting a point from their three outings at the sporting showpiece.

The quarter-finals will see Portugal facing Germany, Nigeria take on Denmark, South Korea will be in action against Honduras and Brazil will entertain Columbia.
