Four arrested in Marquard for alleged xenophobic attacks─── OWEN KOCK 17:51 Tue, 28 Apr 2015
Marquard - Fourteen people, including a minor were arrested in Marquard in the Free State over the weekend for what is believed to have been xenophobic attacks on foreign national shop owners.
According to police spokesperson Billy Jones, the fourteen were arrested for public violence, after the shops of 12 foreigners were looted. He says no one was injured in the incident and that property was damaged.
The 14 appeared in court today and is expected back in the dock on Thursday.
Meanwhile parliament heard today that since 2010, a total of 333 874 foreigners have overstayed their welcome in South Africa.
In contrast, 889 943 foreigners were working legally in the country over that period.
Since attacks on foreigners began earlier this month, 2 767 foreigners were voluntarily repatriated to Mozambique and Zimbabwe.
