Cattle "futures" in the pipeline─── SABRINA DEAN 16:34 Fri, 31 Jul 2015
Bloemfontein - South African livestock farmers may in future be able to trade their meat on the stock exchange in the same way that crop farmers have been doing for the last 20 years.
This is according to agricultural economics student Luan van der Merwe, who spoke about the “cattle futures” concept during an agricultural markets workshop in Bloemfontein.
Van der Walt says the concept will enable meat producers, mainly beef at this stage, to hedge against risk:

Van der Walt says the “cattle futures” concept works very efficiently in the USA.
He says several meetings have already been held between numerous roleplayers, adding that the next meeting with primary producers and the Red Meat producers’ Organisation, among others, takes place on August 12.
