SAPS mum on Dramat golden handshake reports | News Article

Pretoria - Police on Friday would not confirm reports that suspended Hawks boss Anwa Dramat was offered a R3 million golden handshake to vacate his position.

"The matter has not been finalised," said spokesman Lt-Gen Solomon Makgale.

Dramat had asked for payment, as he was entitled to it according to section 35 of the Police Act, Makgale said.

He declined to comment further.

The Mail & Guardian reported that National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega made the offer to Dramat on behalf of Police Minister Nathi Nhleko.

Dramat was also offered R60,000 a month until he turned 60.

He was suspended on December 23, apparently pending a probe into his alleged involvement in the illegal rendition of four Zimbabweans in November 2010. Maj-Gen Berning Ntlemeza was appointed acting Hawks head.

In January, the High Court in Pretoria ruled that Nhleko did not have the authority to suspend Dramat, after the Helen Suzman Foundation took the matter to court.

Judge Bill Prinsloo ordered that Dramat be allowed to return to work immediately.
