Beitbridge - The South African Revenue Service (SARS) confiscated suspected rough diamonds and gold worth close to R2.3m at the Beitbridge this week.
SARS spokesperson, Luther Lebelo, says customs officials at the border post made the finding when they inspected a truck from the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
He says the officials noticed unusual objects in some of the boxes being transported in the truck and found a sealed container which contained gold, black diamonds, industrial diamonds and uncut diamonds.
The estimated value of the diamonds alone is R2,2m and the gold is worth more than R17 000. Lebelo says the inspection forms part of several successful operations held at at various border posts the past two weeks. The seized goods were handed over to the police.
