Bloemfontein - The Proteas resume their first innings of the one-off Test against Zimbabwe in Harare this morning on 201 for four, following at long and tough day at the crease.
Day two of the Test saw just 209 runs being added to scoreboard as the South Africans had to dig deep for runs on the low and slow track.
The vistiors dismissed Zimbabwe for 256, with Dale Steyn claiming five wickets for 46 runs, while debutant spinner Dane Piedt took four wickets for 90 runs.
Dean Elgar and Alviro Peterson got the Proteas off to a solid start with a 57 run opening partnership, before Peterson lost his wicket for 32 runs just before lunch.
Elgar, who scored 61, said runs weren’t easy to come by due to good bowling.
“They are very good bowlers in their conditions, their seamers are pretty good on the wicket that’s been prepared.
“They are very patient and seem try and get you to play out of your game plan and they stick to their game plan very well,” said the former Chevrolet Knights batsman.
“Their spinners also kept us quite quiet throughout most of the innings, but their seamers are difficult to get away.
“They are obviously not your Dale Steyns’ whose got the extra pace which helps on wickets like this, but the scoring opportunities where quite tough at times,” Elgar concluded.
South Africa go into day three still trailing by 55 runs, with Faf du Plessis on 69 not out and Quinton de Kock on 27 not out.
