Free State police spokesperson, Yanga Ngcukana, says the 67-year-old suspect called one of their children in Cape Town at about 01:30 with the information that he thinks their mother has died. Ngcukana says the suspect’s child alerted police in Bethulie. 

When police arrived at the scene the suspect was present. They found his 62-year old wife’s body inside an empty bathtub in the house.

She was lying on her back in the bathtub. Her body had visible bruises all over. According to Ngcukana empty wine boxes and loose cigarettes were found on the floor. 

He says the cause of death will be established in a postmortem. She was declared dead on the scene by paramedics from the Free State Department of Health.

Police suspect the murder might be the result of domestic violence. The investigation continues.
