SA Human Rights Commission investigates conditions at Grootvlei Prison─── REFILWE GAESWE 07:16 Wed, 29 Jun 2016
Bloemfontein - The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) says a significant number of complaints received in the Free State comes from correctional centres across the province.
This is according to the commission’s provincial manager, Buang Jones, who spoke at a roundtable discussion yesterday on the rights of arrested, detained and accused persons at the Grootvlei Prison in Bloemfontein.
The SAHRC hosted the roundtable discussion after the United Nations’ (UN) Human Rights Committee expressed concern about excessive use of force or torture against detainees, as well as deaths resulting from actions of police and prison officials in South Africa.
Jones says they are finding solutions to strengthen efforts in improving conditions of detention and the right of detainees to be treated with humanity and dignity.
