Bloemfontein - Students at the University of the Free State Main Campus have shut down the institution following Blade Nzimande's 8% recommendation on the 2017 university fees.
Nzimande said the department of Higher Education would, however, assist households which earn less than R600 000 a year.
Protests at some universities, including Wits, UCT, Tuks and UFS, began after he had made his announcement.
At UFS students were kicked out of exam halls, as well as the library, by other protesting students.
