Aldam Resort's restaurant gutted by fire─── 20:49 Sat, 15 Oct 2016
Winburg - A fire that broke out at the Aldam Holiday Resort next to the N1 near Winburg in the Free State, was brought under control just after 19:00.
Acting Chief Fire Officer of the Matjhabeng Fire Brigade, Francois Klaassen, has told OFM News the Virginia Fire Brigade received a call at around 17:40.
He says upon their arrival at the scene the flames were raging and the thatched roof of the restaurant building, which includes a bar and kitchen, was starting to collapse. He says other buildings at the resort, including a conference centre, a reception area and chalets, were not damaged.
No injuries were reported.
According to Klaassen fire hydrants at the resort were used, but poor water pressure posed a problem. Two fire brigade trucks, carrying about 3 000 litres of water each, and two vehicles from Hazquip, a company contracted to render support at the Aldam Triathlon and Multi Sport Weekend, were used. This sporting event started today.
Klaassen says farmers with water tankers on their bakkies also assisted.
Meanwhile the organiser of the Aldam Multi Sport Weekend, Doors Kruger, says despite the fire damage to the restaurant, tomorrow’s Mountain Bike Race will continue.
He’s encouraging cyclists to participate in either the 21km, 35km or 81km race.
The race starts at 07:00.
