Britain’s Chris Froome has won the Tour de France for the third time in his career.

The Kenyan-born Froome thus became the first British cyclist to win the world’s most gruelling cycle event three times.

The former St Andrew's School learner rode behind the main platoon during the 21st stage along with the rest of his teammates.

The rider attended school in Bloemfontein for a very short while, but the school is still proud to be associated with Froome.

Froome says his title defence feels just as special as when he won the iconic race for the first time in 2013.

“It's amazing, amazing. It doesn't wear off after two times.

“Rolling on the Champs-Élysées is the same, it's an amazing feeling. My teammates have emptied themselves every day, so it was important to show on the finishing line this is a team sport, this is what it's all about, what we've worked for.”

Froom completed the 3 529km race in 89h 04' 48''.

Germany’s André Greipel won the 113km stage between Chantilly and the Champs-Élysées in Paris in 2h 43’ 08”.

South Africa’s Louis Meintjies crossed the finish line in 10th but it was enough for him to claim the 8th spot on the overall classification.

While the South African team, Dimension Data, finished last in the team competition with 5 stage victories, they won more stages than any other team.
