Kolisi's World Cup hopes hanging by a thread

The Springbok captain Siya Kolisi’s hopes of playing in the Rugby World Cup in France later this year are hanging by a thread.

This comes as Kolisi injured his knee during Saturday’s 22-22 draw to Munster at Kings’ Park in Durban.

Kolisi was carted off the field during the game and this injury is likely to rule him out of the global showpiece in France.

It is believed that Kolisi sustained a partial tear to his anterior cruciate ligaments (ACL) and this would require surgery.

However, should the player undergo surgery he will certainly miss the World Cup that is set to kick off in September.

In addition, Curwin Bosch also sustained an injury during the game and like Kolisi a scan was conducted to determine the damage.

The Sharks Director of Rugby Neil Powell said the prognosis isn’t looking positive at this stage.

“We have enough quality players to stand in for him and to get onto the field, said Powell following the draw against Munster.

“I think Phepsi Buthelezi is a quality player in that regard.

“It's unfortunate that we lost Siya so early in the game because he is influential as a captain and as a player, but I still think there is enough quality to fill his boots.

“We should know by Monday afternoon what the extent of the injuries of Siya and Curwin Bosch are.”

The match in Durban on Saturday was Kolisi's last at home as a Shark before he heads off to France to link up with the French Top14 club, Racing 92.

Next Saturday the Sharks face Leinster in Dublin in the quarter-finals of the URC.
