Ireland are still on course to become the first team to win back-to-back Grand Slams after a 31 – 7 bonus point victory over a young Welsh side.

They have now stretched their record to eighteen successive home ground victories.

Ireland dominated the first half leading 17 – 0 at half-time, thanks to two converted tries by hooker Dan Sheenan and wing James Lowe.  Flyhalf Jack Crawley had a flawless afternoon with the boot, converting all four tries and succeeding with a penalty.

Wales, who lost 11 of their last 12 tests, came back strongly in the second half and their efforts were rewarded when they scored a penalty try early in the second half – their only points in their match.

Late in the second half, Ireland sealed their victory with two more tries by full-back Ciaran Frawley and lock Tadgh Berne.  Despite two yellow cards, Ireland prevented Wales from adding points to the board.  Ireland centre Bundi Akee was named Player of the Match.

Wales are still without a victory in the competition and will desperately try to avoid the wooden spoon in their remaining matches.  The Irish team is top of the log with 15 points, followed by the other unbeaten side, England, with 8 points.

Ireland will next face England on the 6th of March at Twickenham, with Wales having a big mountain to climb against France on the 10th of March.
