“I don't think anyone in Bloem expected us to win the game, so we were the underdogs and were not happy with the performance. There were a lot of mistakes and a lot of penalties conceded which we could have avoided.”

The new Boland Cavaliers coach, Hawies Fourie, was left unhappy with his first outing since making a sensational return to Wellington a few weeks ago.

On Friday night, the Cavaliers lost 38-7 to the Toyota Cheetahs in the SA Cup at the Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein.

The Cavaliers got off to an outstanding start and they were the first to score through a converted try by their captain, Thurlow Marsh.

While the Currie Cup champions were always expected to win against the First Division team, Fourie bemoaned his team's discipline and errors.

“I don't think anyone in Bloem expected us to win the game, so we were the underdogs and were not happy with the performance,” said Fourie.

“There were a lot of mistakes and a lot of penalties conceded which we could have avoided. There were also three yellow cards, so we had to play with 14-men for 30 minutes through that, we made it difficult for ourselves.

“Having said that, there were a lot of things we can be proud of.

Fourie told OFM Sport that while they lost the game, he was happy with their physicality and their strong start.

“We've worked on being more physical and to be harder off the line of defence, we slipped a lot of one-on-one tackles in the first half, and in the second half we were a lot better.

“We had a great start and in the first 15 minutes we played really well. Where we are as a team, the conditioning will always be a bit behind teams like the Cheetahs, Griquas and Pumas. That is something that we will pick up on after the conclusion of the Currie Cup First Division later in the year.”

Next week Saturday the Cavaliers will play in their first home game when they host the Griffons at the Boland Stadium in Wellington.
