The quarter-finalists for the ladies’ singles at Wimbledon were decided on Monday, and last year’s two finalists will face each other in the last eight.

The defending champions, Elena Rybakina, advanced to the last eight after just 27 minutes on court after Beatriz Haddad Maia of Brazil retired injured with the score at 4-1.

The 6th seeded Ons Jabeur thumped the two-time champion seeded Petra Kvitova 6-0 and 6-3, while the 2nd seeded Aryna Sabalenka beat Ekaterina Alexandrova of Russia 6-4 and 6-0.

The 25th seeded Madison Keys of the USA advanced to the last four by beating the 16-year-old qualifier Mirra Andreeva 3-6, 7-6 and 6-2.

Keys said she’s delighted to be in the quarter-finals for the first time in eight years.

“I’m still trying to figure out how I turned that around,” said Keys.

“She’s obviously a phenomenal player who’s playing with no pressure and is going for everything. I had to find a way to stay in the match, keep the momentum going, and here we are.

“You don’t want to be the person who loses to her, for her to get to her first quarter-final. I knew if I could stay in the match my many more years on Tour would kick in. I’ve fallen short of getting back in the quarter-finals a few times. It’s absolutely amazing to do it.”

The ladies’ quarter-finals will get underway on Tuesday afternoon with Iga Swiatek facing Elina Svitolina of Centre Court, while Jessica Pegula will be up against Marketa Vondrousova on Court 1.

Jabeur will take on Rybakina in a repeat of last year's final, while Keys will be in action against the Australian Open champion, Sabalenka.
