South Africa secured an important 2-1 win over Ivory Coast on day two of the Davis Cup Africa Group III tournament being played in at the University of Pretoria.
On Thursday, Devin Badenhorst beat Frederic Coulibaly 6-1 and 6-3 in just 58-minutes to hand South Africa the lead.
But, Ivory Coast leveled matters when Eliakim Culibaly beat Philip Henning of Bloemfontein 2-6, 6-0 and 6-4.
In the deciding doubles match, Henning and Chrisitaan Worst managed to beat Coulibaly and Alex Cyrille Lago 6-4 and 6-2.
Henning said that despite it defeat it was a good day overall for the team.
“It was a good day for Team South Africa. It started out with Devin, who played really well and served very well, giving us the lead,” said Henning.
“Unfortunately, I lost 6-4 in the third, but it was a battle. I fought hard and competed my heart out, which is all I can ask for.
“I didn't get the win, but then Christiaan and I closed it out for us, so I'm very happy. It was a nice atmosphere and a good vibe.”
On Wednesday South Africa claimed a 3-0 win against Algeria.
On Friday morning from 10:00, South Africa will be in action against Togo as they seek promotion to the World Group II playoffs.
