"Don't lose the dream, keep having fun."

The 6th seeded Coco Gauff of the USA made a massive comeback at the US Open to beat the World Number One, Aryna Sabalenka 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the US Open women's final on Saturday to claim her first Grand Slam title on home ground.

The 19-year-old Coco Gauff became the first American teenager to reach the US Open singles final since Serena Williams in 1999. This win also sees Gauff as the first American to claim the home win in the US Women’s Singles final since 2017 when Sloane Stephens secured the title. She is also the third American teenager to win the US Open women’s title, following in the footsteps of her idol Serena Williams.

The game got off to a nervous start for both parties and Gauff fell behind quickly in the first set as Sabalenka got momentum. Gauff managed to increase her intensity which saw Sabalenka drop her serve in the fourth game with a double fault and an unforced error.

Unforced errors piled up for the Belarusian, favouring Gauff’s game as she gained momentum and managed a fantastic second set leading to her win.

This breakthrough first Grand Slam Title for Gauff sees her taking her sport to a new level after being the runner-up at Roland Garros in 2022.

Supersport reported Gauff’s feelings after the win in that she stated, "That little girl, like she had the dream, but I don't know if she fully believed it. As a kid, you have so many dreams. You know, as you get older sometimes it can fiddle away...I would tell her ‘don't lose the dream. keep having fun’."

The teenage prodigy fought hard for the dream this weekend and walked away fulfilled as she held the trophy. Following her victory, the 6th seed will rise to No. 3 in the WTA rankings.
