Sinner and Medvedev battle it out for Australian Open title | News Article

For only the second time in 19 years, the Australian Open title will be claimed by someone other than Djokovic, Federer or Nadal. Jannik Sinner and Daniil Medvedev take to the court on Sunday, the 28th of January, to battle it out for the crown.

There will be a new men’s Australian Open champion crowned in Melbourne on Sunday after Novak Djokovic was knocked out in the semi-finals. The 10-time and defending champion, Novak Djokovic, was dumped out of the year’s first Grand Slam with a four-set defeat to Jannik Sinner of Italy.

Sinner has now reached a Grand Slam final for the first time in his career by beating Djokovic 6-1, 6-2, 7-6 and 6-3.

In the second semi-final, Alexander Zverev took on Daniil Medvdev to determine who would come up against Sinner on Sunday.

Daniil Medvedev made it into the final of the Australian Open for a third time after making a dramatic comeback to beat Alexander Zverev 5-7 3-6 7-6(4) 7-6(5) 6-3 in a nail biting second semifinal. After being down a set and locked at 5-5 in the fourth set tiebreak, Medvedev fought hard to make it to his third Australian Open final.

Medvedev will want to bring his A-game for the final after previous defeats to Djokovic in 2021 and Rafael Nadal in 2022. This year, in his third Australian Open final, it will be a different challenge as he takes on 22 year old Sinner who just beat Djokovic to get into the final.

Medvedev and Sinner will battle it out on Sunday, 28th January, at 10.30am at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne to crown, for the first time since 2014, a ‘new’ Australian Open winner.
