Aryna Sabalenka defends her Australian Open title | News Article

Aryna Sabalenka secured her second straight Australian Open title earlier today when she beat Qinwen Zheng 6-3, 6-2 in 76 minutes. Sabalenka has officially become the first woman in more than 10 a decade to successfully defend her title.

The Belarusian confidently took to the Rod Laver Arena and managed to claim the first Grand Slam title of the year following a stunning and sure footed display right through the tournament by winning all of her sets throughout her 7 matches.

Another factor pointing to the Belrusian’s sure-footed and poised performance is not only that she has managed a title defence this year but also her latest performances saw her reaching at least the semifinals in her past six majors, making three finals and being crowned the winner twice. These factors make Sabalenka one of the most consistent Grand Slam players.

"It's been an amazing couple of weeks and I couldn't imagine lifting the trophy another time," said Sabalenka, the second seed, who became a strong favourite to win after the first seeded Iga Swiatek fell out in round three.

Sabalenka secured her win by breaking at the first opportunity with a backhand which rocked Zheng, then saw off three break points in the next game and from there she continued to force errors from her opponent as she moved towards a calculated victory.

As she saved a rare breakpoint to take a fifth championship point, her victory became final with a clean forehand crosscourt winner whereafter she turned to her team with both arms lifted celebrating the win.

The 25 year old’s country will reportedly not be etched on the trophy next to her name as she took part in this year’s Australian Open as a neutral athlete as a result of Belarus' support of Russia in the war against Ukraine.
