Economist Dawie Roodt says Eskom's application for a 16% electricity hike every year for the next five years will have a negative impact on economic growth.
The power utility made the announcement yesterday (Monday).
The application will be assessed by the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa), with a decision expected in February.
Roodt says while he understands that the country needs to invest in new energy generation, the figures used to arrive at the 16%, are suspect.
