Bloemfontein - Expert negotiators are at the Mangaung Correctional Centre outside Bloemfontein to try and convince hostage takers, reportedly two, to free a medical doctor.

The maximum prison comprises six wings with a hospital in the middle. It is here during a ward round that a male doctor and a nurse were taken hostage around 11 this morning. The nurse has been released unharmed.

The doctor's family has been notified but the police are withholding his name from the media and the the public.

OFM News's Mariné Jacobs is at the prison and says the taking of photographs or video footage has been strictly forbidden.

The hostage takers are reportedly demanding to be transferred to a prison in Gauteng.
