Phil Hockey, the Director of the Percy Fitzpatrick Institute of African Ornithology in Cape Town, passed away this morning after a long sickbed.
Hockey, who was in his 50’s, had been suffering from throat cancer for a number of months.
He is described by his friend and colleague Mark Anderson, the CEO of BirdLife South Africa, as a dedicated and highly knowledgeable ornithologist whose contribution to this field of study has been immense over the years.
In speaking to OFM News, Anderson also said Hockey leaves behind a massive legacy of scientific knowledge, as he trained many conservationists.
Phil Hockey is survived by his wife Samantha, and his mother and sister who both reside in the United Kingdom. Funeral details have yet to be announced.
