Mixed reaction to govt plan to make African language compulsory at school─── 11:00 Wed, 22 May 2013
Johannesburg - There has been mixed reaction to government's plan to introduce a compulsory African language in all schools from Grade R to Grade 9. The Basic Education Department hopes the measure will inject a sense of multilingualism into South African society. Many people expressed excitement at the plan:
Others though, are less thrilled by the prospect.
From next year, it will be compulsory for Grade R and Grade 1 pupils to learn an African language. The Education department however, says parents can decide on the languages that each school will offer.
