Piet van Zyl could make his debut against Scotland

Bloemfontein - Cheetahs scrumhalf Piet van Zyl could possibly make his Springbok debut as early as Saturday when the Springboks tackle the Scottish at the Mombela Stadium in Nelspruit on Saturday.

This comes after the Springbok management said there is a shadow of doubt hanging over the fitness of Francois Hougaard. Hougaards’ Bulls team-mate Jano Vermaak pulled his hamstring against Italy in Durban last weekend and has been ruled out of the remainder of the tournament.

Vermaaks’ injury prompted the call-up of Piet van Zyl.

Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer said a replacement for Hougaard will be appointed should he not be ready for the weekends match.

With former Free State scrumhalf Ruan Pienaar likely to start, Van Zyl could find himself on the bench.

The question remains, should Hougaard not be declared fit, who will receive the call-up? Could we see another Cheetah in the form of Sarel Pretorius get the nod?
