Prince Albert and Princess Charlene of Monaco to visit Mvezo─── 11:58 Wed, 01 Jan 2014
Mthatha - Prince Albert and Princess Charlene of Monaco will on Wednesday tour Mvezo, in the Eastern Cape, and surrounding villages, former president Nelson Mandela's grandson Mandla Mandela said.
"The royal house of Mandela is excited to host the Prince and Princess of Monaco here in Mvezo, the birthplace of Nelson Mandela," he said in a statement. He is the chief in the area.
The couple would tour the area to explore ways in which they could help locals. The prince and princess would also be briefed on drug abuse in the area.
Mandela said during the festive season three elderly family members were killed, allegedly by their children.
"In one case a boy stabbed his grandmother to death and we suspect that he was under the influence of drugs, which is one of our challenges in this area."
Mandela would brief the couple on successful local projects. These included an interpretative centre, a clinic, and a soon-to-be-opened Mandela School of Science and Technology.
"We intend to spend most of our energy facilitating developmental initiatives around the area of Mvezo and other parts of the rural areas," he said.
The prince and princess would be updated on the mourning process of the royal rouse of Mandela after the funeral.
Nelson Mandela died in Johannesburg on December 5. He was buried in Qunu on December 15.
