1017 police officials with criminal records fired─── 06:53 Fri, 11 Apr 2014
More than 1000 police officers with criminal records will be removed from the SA Police Service.
Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa's office has announced that they are in the process of removing 1017 officers while another 67 have left the service.
The removal comes following an audit ordered by Mthethwa, which identified over 1 400 officers with criminal records.
He said the remaining officers are still expected to appear before the fitness board.
Mthethwa said the action shows the department is making progress in continuing efforts to rid police ranks of dishonest officers.
