Law enforcers waiting to pounce this Easter

Bloemfontein - Free State Police, Roads and Transport MEC, Butana Khompela, says inconsiderate drivers who fail to adhere to traffic rules can look forward to spending the Easter weekend behind bars.

The MEC was speaking as thousands of motorists, most notably members of the Zion Christian Church (ZCC), prepare to undertake their annual pilgrimage to Moria in Limpopo. Members from provinces such as the Western and Eastern Cape drive through the Free State to reach their destination.

“During the Easter time we intensify the road safety campaign. We launched the Easter Drive safe Campaign with the deputy transport minister on Tuesday. We also opened the N1 Bypass at Ventersburg” said Khompela.

He added an increased number of traffic officers will be deployed on the province’s major routes, including those linking the Free State with other provinces. Khompela says barrier line overtaking, roadworthiness of public transport vehicles and speed monitoring are some of the concerns traffic authorities will be on the lookout for.

“We are very intolerable of traffic offences. Those who are overtaking on the barrier line... we will arrest you and open a docket. If you are found guilty the likelihood is that your licence may be endorsed” warned Khompela.

He said the Free State was particularly worried about certain roads such as the N6, the N1 near Trompsburg where six people travelling in a bakkie were killed last year, the N8 towards Petrusburg and the N3 near Villiers. These major roads will receive attention this Easter.

“Those are roads that are going to carry heavy traffic and where people become very impatient and drive carelessly. We are going to focus on those roads. We are very serious about policing those roads”, he said.
