Easter death toll continues to rise

───   12:10 Sun, 20 Apr 2014

Bloemfontein - The Easter death toll on the country's roads continue to rise.

More than 30 people have been killed since the start of the long weekend.

Early this morning two people died and five were injured when the vehicle they were traveling in crashed into the barrier on the N3 near Liberty Mall.

Sixteen people lost their lives on Free State roads since the beginning of the weekend and four in the Northern Cape.

Meanwhile, the Road Traffic Management Corporation have called on motorists to be more responsible with regards to road safety.

Spokesperson Thato Mosena says traffic officials have noted many broken-down vehicles parked on road shoulders without switching on hazards or displaying a warning sign to other motorists.

There have also been incidents of overloading and unroadworthy and unlicensed trailers on arterial routes.

Mosena says there has been increasing road safety compliance and thanks motorists who heeded the safety call.
