Bloemfontein - Bloemfontein’s sprinting sensation, Wayde van Niekerk, has set a personal best in the 200m
Last night the 21-year-old Kovies student ran the distance in a time of 20,19 seconds to set his PB, however fell 0,8 seconds short of the South African record, set by Morné Nagel in 13 years ago.
His time also saw him miss the podium, by finishing in fourth, while the biggest name in the field, Yohan Blake, of Jamaica stumbled to a disappointing 6th.
His performance last night, however saw him clock the third fastest time set by a South African.
Nagel (10,11) and Riaan Dempers (10,16) are the only two South Africans to set a faster time.
Panama’s Alonso Edward won gold in 19,84 seconds, followed by Nickel Ashmeade of Jamaica in second and Christophe Lemaitre of France in third.
In the men’s 400m hurdles, Cornel Fredricks claimed the bronze a time of 49 seconds, while LJ van Zyl finished 5th in 49.23 seconds.
