Harrismith - The Free State department of trade and industry is set to launch the first phase of the Tshiame Industrial Development Zone (IDZ) in the Maluti-a-Phofung municipality in the Eastern Free State.

The job creation initiative aims to revive the textile and clothing industry in the area, among other things.

Project director Mzwakhe Shoba says the zone will have a one-stop shop and will have cargo transported by train from Durban or Johannesburg for export purposes.

The project will see over 20 000 jobs created over a ten year period. In the early 80s, the Maluti-a-Phofung area was renowned for textile and clothing factories.

Shoba says with this project, Harrismith will be known as the hub for logistics in the country.
