Kuruman - A security guard at the Ditshipeng Primary School 70km outside Kuruman had a glimpse of the perpetrators who set alight the school but out of fear for his own life, fled the scene of the crime. This is the word from deputy principal William Sebuseng.

He says all the school’s office equipment and all pupil information have been destroyed in the fire which started just after 03:00 this morning.

Sebuseng described the situation at the school as a disaster. A classroom adjacent to the administration building was also damaged in the fire.

Some 55 schools in the John Taolo Gaetsewe District closed more than a month ago due to protests and unrest in the area.

Members of the community started to protest against poor service delivery and to have a section of road tarred. Principals and teachers also received death threats.
