Mommy Matters debate - Travelling with your children is getting harder! | News Article
Mommy Matters on OFM aims to help parents in Central SA by getting the experts to answer your questions on air. Today Mommy Matters hosts a special debate: here is the topic for today's discussion.

The Department of Home Affairs has introduced new immigration policies
affecting travelers to or from South Africa. One of these is the need for an
unabridged birth certificate to accompany all minors traveling to or from
South Africa, as well as written authorization of both parents/guardians (if
one or both are not with the child). This specific regulation has been
postponed for implementation until 1 June 2015.

According to Home Affairs, one of the major motives for the change is an
attempt to clamp down on child trafficking. However, public opinions about the
new rules vary, with some saying this is only going to create red-tape for law
abiding citizens, and others saying they are willing to try anything to protect
their children.

We thought with many people in the process of planning and preparing for
their holidays, it’s a good time to look at what you might need to do
differently next year. We have four guests joining us today to discuss the various
requirements, implications and concerns surrounding the regulations. OFM news' senior journalist, Sabrina Dean joins me in studio and has invited the following guests.

Mayihlome Tshwete is the national spokesperson for the Department of
Home Affairs and will be speaking more about what the new regulations entail.
We are also joined on the line by Nicky Rheeder of Missing Children SA
and Unisa researcher Marcel van der Watt for more on the realities of child
trafficking and whether the new regulations could help.
