Harare - Seven Zimbabwean opposition activists arrested earlier this week for protesting against the government are to remain in custody after prosecutors appealed against their bail, an attorney told AFP on Saturday.

Prosecutors invoked a controversial section of the penal code that allows the state to appeal a bail ruling even after it is granted by the court.

"They were asked to pay US$300 bail each, but the state invoked section 121 of the criminal procedure and evidence act," said the lawyer, Obey Shava.

The group were detained after demonstrations on Monday.

Riot police in the capital Harare used batons to break up protests by activists from the opposition Movement for Democratic Change demanding President Robert Mugabe deliver on his pre-election promise to create two million jobs.

The protest came as leaders from the Southern African Development Community - a 15-member regional bloc - met in the resort town of Victoria Falls for an annual summit, where Mugabe was appointed chairman.
