Thousands of Zambians receive president's body at airport | News Article

Lusaka - Thousands of Zambians on Saturday gathered at Lusaka airport to receive the body of president Michael Sata, who passed away in London earlier this week.

As the plane touched down, many people broke out in tears.

Sata, who died at age 77 from an undisclosed illness, cultivated the image of a defender of the poor. There had been concern over Sata's health since he stopped making public appearances in June.

Security forces at the airport escorted a vehicle carrying the coffin to a conference centre, where members of the public could pay their last respects.

Acting President Guy Scott announced the cabinet will not meet until Sata's funeral on November 11.

Elections are due within 90 days from the president's death.
