Zimbabwe lion hunter involved in killing of Cecil appears in court─── 17:18 Wed, 05 Aug 2015
Harare - Zimbabwe hunter, Theo Bronkhorst, 52, appeared in the Hwange Magistrate’s Court, in north west Zimbabwe on Wednesday, accused of organising an illegal hunt on July 1 on a farm near the Hwange National Park which saw the country’s famous lion, Cecil, killed.
Bronkhorst’s client, Walter Palmer, an American dentist, is wanted for questioning by Zimbabwe police after he shot Cecil with a bow and arrow at night, using a spotlight and bait. The lion was injured and he and Bronkhorst returned the following morning when Palmer shot him dead,
Bronkhorst’s case was remanded to September 28. His co accused, Honest Ndlovu, who occupies the land where Cecil was shot, has not yet been charged and may apply or be obliged to become a state witness in this case.
Several Zimbabwe lawyers say the maximum penalty in this case would be about R5000 (US$400) or one year in prison.
