Top athletics returns to Bloemfontein | News Article

Bloemfontein will brace itself for the 2015 South African Athletics Championships that will be held next month.

Athletics Free State along with Athletics South Africa launched the event this morning which will see it make a turn in the City of Roses for the first time in about 15 years.

The meet will see track and field events in the Sub-Youth, Youth, Juniors and Under 23 age groups.

The Free State has a very rich athletics history dating back to Ester Brand who won the Olympic gold in the women’s high jump in the 1952 Helsinki Games, to our barefoot athlete Zola Budd and more recently middle distance star Johan Cronjé and sprint sensation Wayde van Niekerk.

Athletics South Africa president, Alex Skosana told OFM Sport this morning that ASA is happy with the state of the sport in the Free State and they look forward to the event next month.

"“I’m very excited in fact, because I was with Wayde and Johan Cronjé and many youth athletes in Ethiopia last year.

“They are winning medals and they are our future.

“They are taking over from the senior guys, it seems as if the Free State there will never be a vacuum.

“When some retires, someone else comes in and preforms even better, so we are very, very happy with that,” Skosana said about the sport in the province.

The prestigious meet will take place from 9 to 11 April at the Mangaung Athletics Stadium.
