Haile Gebrselassie of Ethiopia, who is considered as one of athletics' greatest distance runners, has called time on his illustrious career at the age of 42.
After finishing his 16th Great North Run yesterday, the runner said he will be quitting competitive running.
It was not the first time Gebrselassie had said he was calling it quits.
Five years ago after knee problems forced him to drop out of the New York City Marathon, Gebrselassie then said that his competitive days were over, but he returned to racing a few months later.
The soft-spoken Gebrselassie achieved success both on the track and the roads during his long career.
The won Olympics gold in the 10 000m in the 1996 Atlanta Games and the 2000 Sydney Games as well as four World Championships over the distance and four World Indoor Championships in the 3000 and 1500m’s.
