Washington - More and more museums are introducing bans on selfie sticks, with the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum the latest institute to tell visitors they’ll have to check their sticks at the door.

Citing concerns over safety and the conservation of valuable art pieces, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, DC has implemented a ban on the use of the extendable telescopic poles that enable people to take photos with their mobile devices from a distance, reported local TV news station WJLA.

The DC museum is the latest to ban the mobile phone accessory. Other major institutions include the National Gallery of Art, New York’s Museum of Modern Art, the Cooper-Hewitt Design Museum, Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts, the Getty Center in Los Angeles and the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum.

Meanwhile, selfie sticks are also becoming an issue at theme parks, where visitors are trying to auto-capture their thrill ride using the extendable device, points out Mashable.com.

Though selfie sticks -- like all loose articles -- are forbidden on thrill rides, Themeparkinsider.com points out that the accessory has become an invasion of public space at crowded theme parks.

In an online poll, 79 percent of theme park fans agreed that selfie sticks should be banned.

Last year South Korea banned the sale of unlicensed, Bluetooth-enabled selfie sticks.
