North West premier supports Madonsela's 'D account' probe | News Article
Mahikeng - North West premier Supra Mahumapelo on Thursday pledged his support for an investigation into corruption involving a development account.

"We owe it to the communities to provide information on how their money was spent and how the processes were co-ordinated by those in charge of the account," Mahumapelo said.

"It remains our responsibility as the provincial government and relevant parties to ensure that this happens unopposed."

Public Protector Thuli Madonsela was asked to investigate the "D-Account" by communities with mining rights in the North West, Mahumapelo's spokesman Sam Mokaila said.
Mokaila said mines in the North West paid royalties for developing the area. Madonsela received complaints that the money in the D-Account was not being used for development.

The D-Account had not been audited since 1994.

Madonsela met Mahumapelo on Thursday in Brits to give him an update into her investigation, which has been going on for three years.

Madonsela asked Mahumapelo to provide all outstanding documents and to place the account under administration.

"I am encouraged by the premier's commitment today and through his state of the province address to clean up the administration," said Madonsela.

During the meeting it was agreed that capital expenditure on the D-Account would be suspended.
