Springbok - Two Angolan men suspected of smuggling dogs were released on bail of R5000 each by the Springbok Magistrate's Court, Northern Cape police said on Tuesday.

The case was postponed to September 19 and investigations were continuing, Lieutenant Sergio Kock said in a statement.

The two men, Inocencio Da Silva Manuel, 35, and Joao Texteira Antonio, 37, were arrested with 33 dogs at the Vioolsdrift border post on August 17.

"Police searched a Nissan vehicle with its trailer. The men transporting the animals only had export permits for 23 of the dogs and were en-route from South Africa to Angola," said Kock.

The dogs included Boerboels, Huskies, and German Shepherds. Kock said most of the dogs were dehydrated and showed symptoms of malnutrition.

"The dogs were seized by the police in terms of the Animal Protection Act. The animals were transported to the SPCA in Upington where they are currently being monitored and kept," he said.
