Gunfire and power cuts rekindle tension in Maseru─── CHRISTAL-LIZE MULLER 13:11 Tue, 02 Sep 2014
Maseru - Renewed tension and uncertainty in Lesotho following an alleged coup by the military have raised concern among locals and especially the international community based in Maseru.
An American journalist, Michael J Jordan, based in the mountain kingdom, says gunfire and power cuts rekindled tensions in the capital Maseru overnight.
He says people were informed yesterday that police officials are not on duty and police stations across the country have been abandoned.
Based on the insecurity the US Embassy has been evacuated. Jordan says the international school at the embassy has also been closed for the rest of the week.
The events come as the country’s prime minister, Tom Thabane, will reportedly be returning to Lesotho today after regional mediators brokered a road map to ease the country's political crisis.
