Bloemfontein - Free State education MEC, Tate Makgoe, has given his assurance that the quality of education in the province is improving.

Makgoe said at the Legae Intermediate School in Bloemfontein on the first day of the Annual National Assessments (ANA), based on last year’s ANA results the Free State is the most improved province in the country.

He says it is important to assess and teach continuously.

He added that ANA, in which learners are tested for language and numeracy skills, gives them an indication of their own competency levels and assists the department to identify weak points.

Makgoe says the department previously informed schools to focus on the subjects in the ANA and not exclusively on teaching these subjects.

More than 400 000 gr. 1 to gr. 6 including gr. 9 learners in the province will write the assessments that will continue until Friday. The national ANA results will be released in December.
