Three killed in Harrismith veldfires─── 05:37 Fri, 19 Sep 2014
Harrismith - Three people were killed during yesterday's runaway veldfires in Harrismith in the Eastern Free State.
Retired clergyman Johan Mocke, his fifteen-year-old son Zander and a farmworker whose name hasn’t been released yet were killed in the fires that destroyed vast areas of farm land.
The Mockes returned from Australia recently and lived on the Mount Everest Game Farm.
Father and son and the worker died when their bakkie and trailer got stuck on a rock in the blazing veld.
Robert Pollock (19) of Harrismith, who helped fight the fires, says he never wants to experience a day like yesterday again.
Chairperson of the Free State Umbrella Fire Protection Association Thinus Steenkamp says aid from government is needed, adding that the area must be declared a disaster area.
