NW cops appear for protestors' murders | News Article

Brits - Two police officers will appear in the Brits Magistrate's Court on Friday for allegedly shooting dead three protesters in Mothutlung, North West, in January, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) said.

The two warrant officers allegedly shot the protesters during a service delivery protest about the lack of water, spokesman Moses Dlamini said in a statement.

IPID investigated the incident and made recommendations to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

The officers would face three counts of murder, three of attempted murder, one count of illegal possession of unlicensed ammunition and one of pointing of a firearm, Dlamini said.

The officers had been based at the Klipgat Police Station, attached to the Rustenburg public order policing unit.

Michael Tshele, Osiah Rabobe and Enoch Semela were killed during an alleged stand-off between police and protesters.

Police had been called to monitor protesters after they barricaded a road with burning tyres.
