Leeudoringstad: Police not rushing to arrest farmers─── SABRINA DEAN 08:41 Mon, 27 Oct 2014
Leeudoringstad - North West police say they are not going to rush into making any arrests after two farm murder suspects were killed during a shootout with members of the community.
Spokesperson Sabata Mokgwabone confirmed weekend reports about the death of Leeudoringstad farmer Johan van Rensburg, who was shot dead on arrival at his farm Droëkraal on Saturday. Three suspects then placed his body in the boot of his vehicle and fled the scene but the community was alerted and gave chase.
A shootout ensued about 30km from the crime scene on route to Makwassie and two suspects were killed, while the third was injured and is currently in hospital under police guard.
Mokgwabone says the 24-year-old has been charged with murder and will appear in court today or tomorrow, with proceedings to run in absentia if he is not sufficiently recovered. He says they are continuing with investigations into the shootout.
Mokgwabone says the motive for Saturday’s attack is not yet known. Four firearms were also recovered in Van Rensburg’s vehicle and Mokgwabone says police are investigating to determine whether any of these belonged to Van Rensburg.
The suspect will meanwhile appear on charges ranging from murder and house robbery to kidnapping.
