Illegal medical waste dumping site a health hazard | News Article

Bloemfontein - An illegal medical waste dumping site is a health hazard for residents of Batho Location in Mangaung.

Samuel Seate, the Free State Department of Health’s Waste Management Assistant Director, says the dumping site - situated at an industrial area near the residential site - is concerning.

Seate says a license is necessary for storage of medical waste, which should be kept in a storeroom and incinerated.

He says the medical waste was burned at the dumping site, releasing poisonous gas which is then inhaled by residents.

Seate says the dumping site belongs to former Free State forensic pathologist Dr Leon Wagner, who was charged by the Department of Environmental Affairs for illegally storing medical waste.

His case has been postponed in the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court for further investigation until 22 January 2015. He is out on bail.

Seate says residents are still exposed to various diseases through the poisonous gas.
