Potchefstroom - A video has emerged of police officers apparently manhandling the former mayor of Lichtenburg in North West before loading him into a police vehicle.
Police spokesperson Sabata Mokgwabone confirmed to OFM News via SMS that Eugene Nel was arrested on Saturday and that charges of assault of a police officer, interfering with the course of justice and crimen injuria were brought against him.
Mokgwabone says Nel is expected to appear in court today. He allegedly interfered with police officers performing their duty while on the scene of a traffic accident.
Mokgwabone says the police are not aware of Nel’s alleged assault or of the video material of the incident. He says police will respond as soon as they had viewed the footage.
Mokgwabone says Nel can contact the Lichtenburg SAPS if he wants to lay a charge of assault against the officers.
