'Important for SANDF to replace removed Potchefstroom trees' | News Article

Potchefstroom - The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) this morning officially handed over replacement trees to the Tlokwe City Council, after several Chinese Nettles in front of the Potchefstroom Library were removed for recent Armed Forces Day celebrations.

A total of nine trees were removed last week to facilitate the live broadcast of the celebrations, where President Jacob Zuma made an appearance.

The SANDF delivered 12 indigenous River Bushwillows to the municipality. One tree was reserved for this morning’s official handover and ceremonial planting.

The municipality will plant the remaining trees in other areas of the city.

The River Bushwillow tree is found where there is sufficient ground water in Botswana, Mozambique, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Brigadier General Kobus Butler said it was important for the SANDF to replace the removed trees.
