Harrismith - A number of armed robberies have been reported in Harrismith, prompting police to warn communities and business owners to be vigilant in the fight against crime.

Free State police spokesperson, Mmako Mophiring, says four businesses have been robbed in Harrismith in the past month, the latest incident taking place on Monday at a cash loan business.

An undisclosed amount of cash was stolen. Mophiring says 129 cellphones, which were being repaired, and jewellery belonging to employees were stolen last Wednesday.

He says four men entered the shop pretending to enquire about cellphone costs. One pulled out a firearm and demanded employees open the safe.

After the safe was found empty the suspects demanded cellphones and other goods and fled the scent on foot. Mophiring urges community members to refrain from buying stolen goods while business owners should secure their shops.

Mophiring says the four suspects involved in the cellphone robbery are most likely linked to other robberies.
