NW gov 'forced' to intervene at Madibeng─── CATHY DLODLO 07:27 Sat, 27 Jun 2015
Brits - The North West department of local government and human settlements says it was forced to intervene at one of its municipalities notorious for service delivery protests and political leadership problems.
The Madibeng municipality, which includes Brits, had its equitable share withheld by National Treasury and according to the department’s report, experienced the most service delivery protests in the province.
Several interventions – including putting the municipality under administration, suspending the municipal manager, launching forensic investigations by the department and changing the political leadership had little impact over the years.
The provincial department, however, took a decision in March this year to intervene again- taking over its executive powers, focusing on water and sanitation services which were the main reasons for community unrest.
